That's what they say, but never-the-less, I don't like my dogs kissing me after they've licked their gentiles!

there was a write up about this in a paper I had read....there seemed to have been a lady was allowing their dog to share a plate of food with their child...and the doctors heard about it and went nuts! So much so that they put it in the paper to let everyone know that is wrong, and was nothing more than a myth

And I also found this from ABC news: Oct. 14, 2005

Proof From a Veterinarian

To find out just who has a cleaner mouth, we asked veterinarian and fellow dog lover Marty Becker, author of "Chicken Soup for the Dog Owner's Soul," to offer his opinion.

"They raid the garbage can. You know, we give each other a peck on the cheek when we say hello, they give each other a peck on the rear end," said Becker. "All you got to do is look, watch, smell and you'll realize that that is not true."

He thinks the myth that a dog's mouth is clean stems from their practice of licking their wounds.

"And they'll be licking that wound and you'll notice that the wound heals very fast … what that tongue does is it gets rid of the dead tissue," said Becker.

He compares that tongue lashing to the work of a surgeon who cleans out a wound, and said the licking also stimulates circulation.

So it seems it's just a myth!

yes

EDIT:

A dog will not have smelly breath unless you are feeding it wrong. Also it seems w/e is in their mouth is killing bacteria....while ours is full of it. I mean our mouth is only the nastiest place on our body so really dogs should be watching out from what they can catch from us! Not to mention the garbage food we eat. Toothbrushes often have fecal matter on them (yummy). Humans are probably more likely to get infections not because our animal friends but because humans are so clean that our immune systems are weak compared to other animals.

Also its not a myth. Its been tested by mythbusters and a few other bored scientists where human and dog saliva is placed into a petri dish with bacteria growing...something. Humans had tons of large colonies and dogs had a few small colonies. I also performed this test for a classroom biology project. In fact...did you know toilets are cleaner than most drinking fountains?

It is not true that dogs have cleaner mouths than humans. That is rediculous, dogs lick their own butt and eat gross things. The will pick up almost anything with their mouth. This myth comes from the fact that dogs have less TYPES of natural bacterian in their mouths than humans do. But this does NOT mean that they have a less amount of bacteria in their mouths, just less different types.

no. both humans and dogs have bacteria in the mouth. At least humans (or clean ones at least) brush their teeth on a regular basis. Why do dog bites get so badly infected.

in a scintific sense, yes. they have less bacteria in thier mouths then humans. But cleaner, like hygenicly, i would say no, they do lick their butts.

Yes, but my dogs and many others eat gross things here and there like cat poop. I would be careful with those big doggie kisses!

No they really don't so please don't believe that old myth. You can get all sorts of diseases from a dogs mouth because they lick their butt and may have feces and other bacteria on their mouth.
