Collect crayons, coloring books and stuffed animals. Gift them to your local children's hospital, church daycare, police department or Department of Human Services. The collected items can be used by the agencies to hand out to underprivileged and traumatized children.
Do you sew, knit or have another craft that you are good at? Make a blanket or outfit of clothing or book bag for children who are underprivileged. These items can be donated to local agencies working with underprivileged children.
Children in the foster care system move from home to home with their clothing in garbage bags. What about running a drive to collect suitcases and donate them to your local Department of Human Services?
Collect used books and magazines and take them to homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, nursing homes, day cares, and other agencies working with underprivileged adults and/or children

I would suggest that you work through your local volunteer center. There are many volunteer centers throughout the country that provide a connection to one-time, short-term, and long-term volunteer opportunities that match your needs and interests.

Your volunteer center can also provide you with appropriate documentation that you may need for school as well. There are always a great variety of things to do, such as tutoring children, working with seniors, grooming pets at the animal shelter, and working with the environment.
Good luck!

Try www.volunteermatch.org or www.faithinaction.org for local projects. Animal shelters always need people to walk the animals and help show them to visitors. Children's groups always need people to play with the kids. You can also do clean-up with a group in a needy area, like painting over graffitti or just taking away trash, or you can help clean up a park or a local waterway like a river.

Have you been to your local nursing home? There are many who live there and yet have no visitors. That gets awful lonely, especially when you have worked hard all your life and end up there. You could make their day brighter by spending some quality time with them. Get to know them, you will be surprised at what you learn. A great experience!!!! One you will never forget and yet will make a positive impacat on your life for years to come!!
