Whenever I go to sleep at night I hear sounds. It happens just as I'm falling asleep. It's not audible sounds, but just things I hear in my mind like people talking, etc. Does this just happen because my brain's falling asleep? Does this happen to anyone else?

Sounds like you're still wound up!

if you're a student or a workaholic stop working so late, your mind is still on full speed.

Take time out before bed to slow down, gentle music, warm bath & the like, all help.

So does writing down the things that are on your mind, then leave them to worry about tomorrow.

Try to think of the 'nice things you saw today or may see tomorrow, you may be surprised!

Do you have severe abuse in your past?

If yes, you may have a dissociative disorder, such as Multiplicity and what you may be hearing is what MPD's hear when the alters are talking in the internal world among themselves. This isn't schizophrenia, that is totaly different from MPD. It isn't unusual for an undiagnosed Multiple to have their main awareness of their alters, be 'people talking in my mind' as they are going off to sleep.

If you feel this could be, then chose a therapist who you have done research on, as this disorders is mis-diagnosed by most psychiatrists and psychologist, due to lack of experience with it and training.

Find a specialist who can prove to you that they have experience and success in treating dissociative disorders, multiplicity, which is now called Dissociative Identity Disorder. This disorder is 100% cureable with the correct therapy. Make sure you see a Psychologist, not a Psychiatrist; many reasons for chosing a Psychologist over a Psychiatrist. A therapist who understands MPD wouldn't attempt to medicate you, as they realize MPD isn't a psychosis and medication is seldom beneficial.

If this continues on or has been going on most of your life, please consider what I have said.
BEST WISHES!

Don't worry about the sounds going to sleep as long as you remember the messages in the morning dreams. Try and be as accurate as possible . Others need the help too.

I know that when waking we tend to hallucinate to some degree. It happens to me. Don't have it happen when falling asleep though. I know when I used to drink a lot I could really hear music in my head.

That would be what iI call 'la la land'... When you are drifting off.. you reach that point where you are almost asleep, yet are still aware a bit.. not only can you hear things but you can see things too hahahaaa..

When you go to sleep, especially when you have your own room/ your the only one in the house, etc, your hearing seems to get sharper. It's one of our 'caveman' instincts (when a caveperson was alone, they needed to be alert for approaching danger). Try it one time. If you are alone in a room, see if your hearing seems to be sharper (you tend to be alert aswell). Even when you know you are in a safe, secure, locked house, etc, your mind doesn't want to rest until it seems safe to do so in your subconcious mind. In toher words, it's a normal thing.

Yes, it's normal. It's the first stages of sleep. If this were happening at any other time, then we might have to worry.

a few second before I am out-I'm in a weird dreamlike state, i'll have odd thoughts and hear things. I think it happens to everyone.

Not to me no but I've known a person with bi-polar disease who experienced hearing voices.
