Can I travel with my dog in a plane?

In a few months I'll be traveling to Cali. to enter in the university; but I dont want to leave my dog with my parents because I love it so much. How much it would cost to take my dog with me? (including bying the cage, paying his ticket, everything), would I have problems because of that?, Someone who had done it before can share with me her/his experience.

Yes, of course you can take the dog on a plane!

First, it depends on the size of the dog. If it will fit in a carrier that can fit under the seat in front of you (e.g. small dog), you can carry it on with you. There is usually a small charge in addition to your ticket.

If it's a larger dog, then you'll need to check it - You'll need a large plastic "hard-sided" crate (Around $100) and it usually costs around $150 for the airline cargo fee.

It is possible to have your dog fly to CA. Whether he can go into the cabin with you it depends on his size and the airline you choose. The crate must be small enough to fit under the seat yet large enough for the dog the stand with room at the top of the crate. Otherwise, the dog will be placed in baggage. Yes you can take your dog on the plane. If it's a small dog you get a small carrier that can fit under your seat and the dog can go with you on the plane for about 100. or 200. more If it's a bid dog it would have to go with the cargo under the plane and have a bigger cage not sure what that cost maybe the same. Yes thats not a problem, check with your airline to see what they require. If its a small dog you can take it as carry on on some airlines. Larger dogs must go as live cargo. Normally airlines require a standard hard platic travel kennel, food, water, a health certificate from your vet and payment if the dog does cargo. You need to contact the airline carrier and ask them what all is needed. They do change, so that it is important you contact them again before you fly.

You must also take into consideration that when you go to college are you evan going to be able to spend time with your dog on a daily basis. It is not fair to your dog if you are going to be gone for long hours. I would suggest leaving your dog with your parents where he/she can receive more attention on a daily basis. You will find that many pets become unwanted at college campuses. It costs money to take care of them.

There are some bad horror stories of people who have had their pets flown. Do a search on the internet for flying your pets on airlines or something.

call the airline and talk to them. they know exactly what needs to be done as procedure varies by airline. usually they have you remove the collar, keep the water and food bowl empty and put ice cubes in teh water dish (won't be fed unless there is a huge delay but will be given water by airline cargo staff) and usually newspapers are better than a towel if he messes the crate the airline people will pull the newspaper out before he is sent through to you. The vet papers are given directly to the person at the counter and they keep them on file. ADD; You CANNOT sedate him. It is against airline policy and your friend will have to sign paperwork stating that the dog has not been sedated, when he last ate, etc...

I think flying with your dog is simple compared to finding an affordable (for university student) place to live that allows dogs. You certainly can't live in the dorms with a dog. Anyway, I estimate the crate together with the fee for flying him should be less than $200. You need a dog friendly place to go once the plane lands.

I know that you can board any Southwest Airlines passenger plane with a small dog that will remain on your lap while in flight with no hassle at all. Dogs larger than that have to be ticketed and sedated, then kenneled in the belly of the plane.

i fly with dogs frequently
if yoru dog is under ten pound or so you can travel pretty much at any time with the dg in cabin, the cost varies but i have found it to be between 50us and 150us extra per flight.

If yoru dog is 20lbs plus you are going to have a harder time. I flew with a rottweiler and GSD from mexico city to the states and i went with American Airlines. It was 100 per dog, and they let me watch them board each time and the pilot alerted me to thier presence before takeoff as a safeguard.
The problem with dog as cargo is that they are not climate controlled completely so you cant usually fly with dogs as cargo when the temperature is over 80F.
The crates i use are sky kennels, by vari kennel and they are about 80us a piece, and worth the extra money.

us airways and continental no longer accept dogs as cargo but accept dogs as carryon with the limit of 10lbs and under 10inches. Delta only accepts dog as cargo from october-may but accept them as carryon anytime
American is the only one without an embargo defined by months but as i said if its over 80F the govt wont let dogs fly as cargo...period
