all of it's connected and I may be 12 but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. Our water has been weird because of global warming freezing the ice caps making polar bears, penguins and other animals extinct. This is cause by pollution in cars ran by gas that WE are running out of. While we make cars ppl spill things in the ocean by factories causing water pollution. It's scary where we are headed in our future. Population growth is the key to all out environmental dismay. It is a total mess and we are going down hill. Quite frankly it's scary where we are headed but we can stop it if you do something about it. Save anything request a law to lower population or highering illegal dumping fees, ANYTHING. Another thing that can help is to get a smaller car. Ppl I'm not asking u to buy a hybred but stop getting gas wasters ppl won't change cars because they feel big in a big car. how are we going to get over a problem if we can't get over our selfs. what will you do?

Things aren't quite so bad. The known reserves of oil and gas will last more than 10 years and there are unknown reserves as well. Best estimates are 25 to 30 years worth of reserves (based on current usage). That might sound a long time but it's not - back in the 1970's it was thought there were 30 years of reserves and no-one did anything, fortunately the figures were wrong, had they been correct we would now have run out of oil and gas.

We need to seriously start looking at alternatives - now, 30 years isn't a long time. Wind, tidal and solar power are still in their infancy despite being around for more than 30 years.

Fresh water won't be a problem in general. This comes from rain water collected in reservoirs and filtered and purified for drinking. As the world warms up there is more rain - the hotter it gets the more water evaporates from the seas and oceans and falls as rain. The difference will be that the rain will fall in different places and we're already seeing droughts in areas where rainfall has been plentiful and there has been more flooding in recent years than at any time since records began.

Water will become a more valuable commodity in some countries - a) because less rain falls and b) because there will be more people, this is especially true in Africa and some Asian countries.

Global warming is causing the ice caps to melt faster than at any time in known history. In the Arctic and Antarctic the ice is up to 4,000 metres thick and ice cores have been taken that allow scientists to analyse weather patterns over several million years.

The most serious consequence of this is the melt water causes sea levels to rise. The last few days has seen the worlds first climate refugees when islanders from the Cartaret Islands in the Pacific Ocean have evacuated their islands because they are being submerged by the rising ocean.

You'll be pleased to know that for now the polar bears and penguins are safe but you are right to be concerned.

Scientist are unanimous that the world is warming up but where there is no general consensus is on how much of this warming is caused by human activity. Left alone the planet goes through it's own cycles of warming and cooling and we are currently in a warming phase. There's no denying that the activity of humans is contributing to climate change and global warming, the evidence for that is overwhelming and all branches of science have come to the same conclusion (geologists, hydrographers, meteorologists etc). It's estimated that by the end of the century the average global temperature will rise between 2 and 7 degrees centigrade (different sources have different figures).

In some places such as Siberia global warming is already very much a reality and vast areas of frozen wilderness that have been solid ice since the last ice age are melting - currently one million square kilometres. As the ice melts huge quantities of methane gas are released which in turn contributes to global warming.

You're right to be concerned and for someone who's 12 you're very well informed on the subject.

There are many ways to help reduce the effect we have on the planet, some are mentioned on these sites...

For further information you might want to look at the Stern Report. This was conducted in the UK last year and is the most extensive investigation into the causes and effects of global warming. the full report is here ... http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/independent_reviews/stern_review_economics_climate_change/sternreview_index.cfm and a summary can be found here... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6098362.stm

I'm not the one in control of that decision and neither are you, how can anyone even answer that question. I'm sure it will be so much that we will all hafta start riding bikes and walk to work. I'm so tired of the gas price drama. It sucks, and it ain't getting better anytime soon. Get a second job like me, to compensate for it. Ride the bus if you don't wanna pay for gas, it's cheaper and if you're too fat or lazy to walk or ride a bike, it's perfect for you. If you live too far from work to do any of those, get something closer. You always have alternatives even if you don't like you're choices. And trust me, no one feels sorry for the oil companies and how little they actually make. They made out pretty damn well at our expense, it's time to let up on the consumer. Without us they have no business. Almost everything runs on some kinda fuel, if it gets so expensive that we can't afford it anymore, they will not last forever. Amish people have been using a horse and buggy for like, ever. Eskimos use dog sleds, Let's get creative with our alternatives, people. It may not be the most comfortable method of travel but it does work, even if you can't put spinners and dvd players on a horse.

At twelve, you are worrying way too much and the facts that you have been given have been stretched to scare you.

We will not be out of oil or gas in 10 years, they have been predicting when oil will run out for 30 years or more and the date continues to get pushed back.

In America, many areas that once were considered badly polluted have made many changes and have improved.

I'm not saying we can't do some things better, but get information from several sources first. While we may not be perfect, it is nowhere near as bad as you have been lead to believe.

No we won't have to "convert it" . When I was 12 liberals told me we were all gonna die in a few yearsbecause we were messing up the world so bad but they were wrong. There's plenty of stuff here for us all, and we're gonna figure out how best to use it.
I smell a skunk...and there are more polar bears now than there were 50 years ago so they like global warming, they like it a lot.
