A large portion of the liver must be damaged before liver failure occurs. Liver failure may develop rapidly over days or weeks (acute liver failure) or gradually over months or years (chronic liver failure).Ultimately, liver failure is fatal if it is not treated or if the liver disease is progressive. Even after treatment, liver failure may be irreversible. In terminal cases, the person may die of kidney failure (hepatorenal syndrome), because liver failure can eventually lead to kidney failure. Liver transplantation, if performed soon enough, can restore a person to normal health, but it is suitable for only a small number of people with liver failure. Up to 10% of patients who experience acute kidney failure will suffer irreversible kidney damage. They will eventually go on to develop chronic kidney failure or end-stage renal disease. These patients will require long-term dialysis or kidney transplantation to replace their lost renal functioning.
With a history of a heart condition, your father is probably not a good candidate for a liver and/or kidney transplant, so the prognosis is grave. I am SO sorry! I lost my mother to liver cancer when her liver failed, then her kidneys, then all the other organs, in turn.

I'm sorry to hear about your father. My father in law has a very diseased liver and and went into failure about 3 1/2 weeks ago. The ammonia built up to a very high level and he was not coherent at all when they put him in the hospital. They couldn't tell us if he was going to come back or how much brain damage there was going to be because his levels were so high. They finally got him leveled off after about 10 days and he started to come out of it. He's has been in rehab for the past two weeks and its starting to walk again and talk although his speech is very slow.
It is really tough to watch someone go through this. My husband got his father back and I will pray that you get yours back too.

If your cat is peeing blood (orange) he's in the process of dying. Since this is PREVENTABLE with vet care, it's your choice to put him through this agony. This is one problem your cat really does need vet care for. Make arrangements for paying the vet, that or have the cat euthenized before he has to suffer any further. Dying from kidney failure, a preventable thing, is agonizing for the cat. You can swing a vet checkup and blood test. He's not in liver failure, he'd be dead by now and his gums would be yellow. Kidney issues are treatable. The longer you wait, the less treatable they are.

My friend, Im sorry to hear about your father. I know you want some answers, but the best person to talk to is the doctor. Every case is different. And nobody here knows your father and taking advice from us isnt a good idea, Call the on-call doctor. They will speak to you.

Not very long I'm sorry... [[[ ]]]
You stay with him as long as you need and make sure you talk to him and how much he's always meant to you. Make him laugh and tell him it's Ok to go...becacause he needs reassurance more than ever now. He knows he's dying. Don't try and play it down, you aren't doing him a favor.
Just spend as great a time as you can with him and your Mom.
If they let you, bring in his fav foods...candy...books,whatever he needs. (quilt from home...sheets from home)
If you need help find someone to talk to...friends, family, clergy. You don't say how old you are, so it's hard to tell you certain things....
Just know that some of 'us' are hoping your Dad has a peaceful passing with as little pain as possible.....and we wish the rest of your family a little peace and warmth. [[[ ]]]
(if you want to talk some more...go to www.petloss.com and leave a message for Chrysantha. I'll be happy to talk to you...I've lost my whole family, except my little sister. I know how you feel..)
