How did it get to be in society that "you're welcome" is the standard responce to "thank you?"

"You're welcome" actually means or is a shortened version of "you're welcome to our help anytime" or something of the sort, thus showing that if the thankful person needs help again, he can come back. This morphed into an ordinary response.

It was decided centuries ago that "you're welcome" was vastly preferable to F,,,O!

it make sense that when someone thanks you, you let them know that you were happy to do it for them
