Blu-ray-disc movies look good but regular DVD movies don't look that great on a big hi-def TV. Do hi-def TV's have a switch to turn off the high definition mode for regular TV and DVD's?

Yes, they're worth it. No, they don't have a switch. The better ones have better picture processing available when upconverting from low def to view at the native resolution. Pioneer Elite does a good job. My Sony seems to do pretty well. Many, many other cheaper brands do a lousy job of upconverting. That's why they say "You get what you pay for."

Of course Blu-ray will look good on a big HDTV. They are mastered in 1080p while normal dvds are mastered in 480p. Big screen tv have to do an upconversion for normal dvd. There's no switch. Some TVs have better upconversion capability. Now is the good time to get on the HD bandwagon, prices on HDTV are going down.

Absolutely. If you go to this site and click HDTV on the left menu, it will show you an example of HD vs Standard. Then you can judge for yourself.

Ours doesn't have a switch it just shows both and dvd's are very clear. Check your connections maybe you have something hooked up wrong.
