I saw my name and just had to answer! As previously stated, Jean is an English variation of Jane, also English. There are numerous other variations, if you consult a baby name book. It is the feminine form of John, which is spelled Jean in French, and Jan or Ian in other languages.

I just looked this up in my baby name book, and it says that Jean is of Scottish origin.

Jean is actually English when it's a woman's name. Jean is a medieval variation on Jane, so you're right in that they are related.

The Irish alphabet doesn't include the letter "J" though there are a number of feminine Irish names related to Jane such as Síne, Sinéad, and Siobhan.
