I claimed my 17yr old as a dependent and she earned less than $10,000. How should I report this income? She claimed exempt on her w-4.

You do not report your dependent's income. Your dependent must file a tax return, with zero exemptions, and report her income.

She will be able to take a standard deduction of $5,150 and the rest of her earnings will be taxed at 10%.

So if she earned $10,000, her federal tax owed is going to be close to $485.

I've been using the on line IRS web site for the last few years. They provide a list of free sites for on line filing, and they seem to do as good a job as any H&R Block I've ever been to. Fast, efficient and free.

There's a HR Block in every city... gather up all your stuff and find a location near you.
