Believe it or not, I really AM curious as to why they tell you to move.

It's against the International Fire Code (adopted by many communities) to block a fire exit (even if it's your luggage, etc.). If it's you, it's probably because if there was an emergency, you might get trampled getting out. Believe it or not, there have been fires where this did in fact happen.

I'm not sure in what context you're talking about. On a plane? In a store? There shouldn't be anything obstructing the path to the emergency exit (supplies, equipment, luggage, etc.). Usually they are more concerned if you have a lot of stuff with you that would take time to move.

Because you might be blocking it, or appearing to block it, and cause other people to panic or maybe if you're REALLY tall, they won't see it because you'll be in the way.

if you were standing in front of the sign then maybe people would not see the sign. or something.
