This is what Consumer Reports had to say:
The Sephia is noisy, uncomfortable, and shoddily built. The 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine provides adequate acceleration, but the automatic transmission shifts abruptly and often. The Spectra, new in 2001, is merely a lightly restyled four-door hatchback version. In 2002, the Sephia and Spectra names merged to just Spectra. The redesigned 2004 Spectra offers a comfortable ride, quiet interior, and good fit and finish. The four-cylinder engine delivers lackluster acceleration with the automatic and unimpressive fuel economy. A Spectra5 hatchback was available starting in 2005. The Spectra comes with standard side- and head-protection air bags, but it still got a Poor in the IIHS side-crash test. ABS can be extremely hard to find.
I think that after driving a Camry you will not like a Kia. Try to buy a used Camry or Corolla.

I bought a ‘05 Spectra SX, at first I was a little skeptical about them considering the cheap factor. After a few days driving it I realized they had gone a long way to improve their product especially after they got the BMW designer on board.
It handles great, very tight suspension, acceleration is good (Manual), it feels solid, gas mileage is good, and it has a quiet interior.
There are other small factors like switch pressure responses, For example; The turn signal doesn't have any travel in it before it engages, whereas some cars will have a turn signal that feels like it is bending so much it is about to break.
Other switches have a good tight feel to them, giving you a more comfortable feeling.
The downsides I have experienced so far;
The placement of the passenger airbag warning light next to the clock is silly. It could have been moved to the instrument cluster and reduced to a light. It would make way for a possible information cluster (Gas mileage, Distance to empty, temperature etc.) upgrade.
From the exterior, it looks a little too rounded like a fish bowl. A slightly flatter top and a little lower would make for better styling (Personal preference?) It was made that way to give better headroom for the inside.
The rear speakers are absolute hell to get to if you want to upgrade them.
There is very few manufacturer upgrades available.
There are few aftermarket upgrade options available for the Kia Spectra market, mostly because it is still trying to climb the ladder. There are a couple of performance sites that offer some great upgrades; You can install a Garrett T3 turbo kit on the spectra, combined with a new exhaust, intake, and headers can give you up to 300 horsepower!

Not a good car! Buy a used Camry or a used Corolla. You will be very disappointed with a KIA. Take whatever you are going to spend on the KIA and put it into a used Toyota/Honda product of any kind and you will be further ahead. My Honda Civic SI got stolen and I was short on cash so I bought an 84 corolla with 75K for 950 bucks. I drive a thousand miles a week and 15,000 miles later it still runs great. Another alternative is the Chevy/Geo Prism which is the Corolla clone.
Good luck.

i think for the money they are good cars but a lot of them seem to be giving a lot of problems right now,so a lot of people have stopped buying them,i have drove a lot of them,and they drive really good,but with the problems they been giving you might want to look at something else,there's lots of good cars on the market like the Nissan sentra,their really good cars,for now though i would pass on either of the KIA,s,good luck with it.

i own a repair shop,and i can tell you from experience that their real good cars,your going to hear stories about any car made,especially on here,everyone has a story to tell,but the KIA is a good vehicle,they have a ten year warranty on them,that's a good warranty,,i have serviced a few of them,and they really don't give a lot of problems at all,i have several customers who own them as work cars and really like them,they are cheap operated ,and pretty much trouble free,,i almost bought one a while back,but missed out on a good deal on it,s yes it would make you a good car,i think you could get a lot of good service from it,i would just as soon drive a KIA as i would a Camry but what you need to do is drive it and see for your self,don't let anyone on here convince you to buy it or not buy it,use your own judgment on it,and you,ll like it a lot more this way,but i will tell you this,they are good cars ,good luck i hope this help,s.

to find reviews on any car, you should go to emdunds.com but everybody has their own opnion on this car, you either don't like it or you like it. My suggestions is for you to get a decent toyota corolla. Every car is good as long as you know how to treat it and change the oils and parts when needed and do regular maintence.
