I've seen this question before but maybe ideas?
My son is 3yr 1mo and understands what the potty is for, and has actually used it twice about 2 weeks ago. I am having him sit to pee, and he will sit and talk to me on the toilet.
I don't know if it's my timing, or what, but he uses his pull-ups as diapers, and it's a huge expense for me. I ask him if he wants to go sit on the potty, and he says no (but he says no to everything right now.) but he will sit on it if I take him to the bathroom, and isn't upset as if I were pushing him.
Since he doesn't always answer truthfully and says no about 75% of the time it's very hard to know if he's "getting" it when I say that he went potty in his pullup and he should use the potty. When he wore diapers, he would tell me when he needed changed, but he doesn't now that he's in pullups! Help! I mean, he's done it before, why not now?

You know, silly as this sounds, at home, you CAN let him run around nakkie. :) Just take him to the potty once an hour (sooner if he's just eaten or drank anything) and keep an eye on him. He needs to sit on the potty for AT LEAST 5-10 minutes each time, just to catch him, and to give him time to relax.

Don't scold him if he has accidents, just clean them up as calmly as possible. Remember that soap, water, and a little salt will take just about ANY color out of white carpet *grin*. Don't worry about potty training at night until he's confident in the daytime. Teach him to SAY 'potty' (or whatever word you use) and don't ask him if he's got to go. Once he starts to get the sitting thing down and you want to progress to standing, a cheap way to get his "aim" down is to use cheerios. Put one in, let him aim at it. He'll think it's the coolest thing. (BOYS! *giggle*)

The most important thing is that everyone who is looking out for him has to be CONSISTENT. That means that if you take him every hour, and then you leave and let your husband/partner/babysitter/etc take care of him, THEY have to take him every hour also. And YES, this also means that if you're in the mall or grocery store, etc, and the time comes up, you need to take him once an hour to the potty also (and watch out for times in between, too).

This can be a hectic thing, but if you stay consistent, don't get upset at mistakes, and PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE for triumphs (go over the top!), he could easily be trained during the day in under a week.

As far as at night, when you DO start that, you gotta set your alarm clock, reduce liquids a couple hours before bedtime, and be sure to get up and MAKE him go, even if nothing happens.

My daughter did the pull up as diapers thing for a while, it was too expensive for sure. So I started asking her and taking her to the potty every hour and after a while she started to get it. The we used Pullups at nap and bed time only, and after about a year we are finally to underwear all the time!
good luck

stop using the pull upas during the day. use them for naps and bedtimes and long are rides or when out when you may not be near a bathroom,
second dont ask him if he has to go take him once an hour. but him some big boy underwear about a dozen or more pairs

good luck

To encourage my nephew to go potty, my sister bought flushable potty targets that you drop into the toilet. He wanted to go all the time so he could pee on the duck.

well you have to be very consistant with it.yes you will have to ask him if he needs to go to get him to understand but you need to be taking him to the potty right after asking so it sticks with him.he will get it eventually it just takes time and paitience
