There are many and varied possible ways to translate the idea of Satan from the various cultures that he was absorbed from by Christianity.
In Greek, the term diabolos (Διάβολος, "slanderer"), carries more negative connotations than the Hebrew ha-Satan (שָׂטָן, "accuser", "obstructer", "adversary") which possesses no demonic qualities in the Torah writings and is believed to be by many a great and glorious Angel who was created on the sixth day of creation.
One way of translateing this idea is as an accuser but in the common usage he was not seen as an adversary of God but as an assistant who challenges us till we get it right.
I realize that this is not the way that Christianity ended up seeing this idea but that was not the view of the earlier Christians and was more of a later roman catholic definition that was created only through careful selection of scripture to be included in the bible.
There are many excellent books that explain this in great detail, far better than I ever could.
Origin of Satan by Elaine Pagels is quite informative.

Third answer below mine did a great job of showing what I meant about careful selection of scripture to be included in the bible.

Here's some Old Testament Scriptures that show Satan as the enemy of Israel. How could "Jewish tradition" call Satan a good guy when their own scriptures call him their enemy, hmmmm?
1Ch 21:1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.
Psa 109:6 Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand
at his right hand.
Zec 3:2 And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: [is] not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
.
Zec 3:1 ¶ And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.
Whoever told you that, is completely ignorant.

with a bit of luck this might open people's minds somewhat extra while they comprehend their perception is unproven and interior an identical type as all different religions. Rollo, why could we placed attempt into attempting to instruct information of no god while non secular all and sundry is those telling us, without evidence, what existence is all approximately?

No. He is a fallen angel who is warring with God to win people over to his side. He does not have horns or goat legs. That is the mythical being some may think about. He looks like an angel of light, but he is all evil.

God in Jewish and Muslim sent shaitan or satan (adversary) in order to disuade the people from God's wishes as a test of faith.
