Need more info. How oldis the house? Is it to live in? or to rent out? how long are you going to live in it?
Simple things are the most obvious. Paint, wallpaper, carpet, flooring or refinish wood floors. New lighting and plumbing fixtures, baseboard, crownmolding, new interior doors.
If you're cabinets are in decent shape refinishing or even painting them.
What's your budget and how handy are you? If this is a transition house don't knock out any walls, or add any rooms.

A good primer and a couple coats of a good quality paint go a long way. The prepainted moldings at ceiling height hide a lot of sins. Clear a room at a time when painting and put down drops. It will go so much faster. Always use a primer.
Caulk around windows, doors, and moldings.
Scrub everything down really well and remove clutter.
If the walls are in really bad condition in a kitchen or bath, go with wallpaper.
Use the same color paint or stain on the trim in every room.
Paint all the walls and ceilings of every room throughout the house a nice warm neutral tone. Saves on having a bit of this and a bit of that left over. Buy the paint in 5 gallon quantities. If you have to have color, paint one room a very bold color that will set off the entire home.
One of the cheapest kitchen fixes is new laminate counter tops if you are at all handy and can install the basic sink plumbing.
If you can handle painting check out some of the paint finishes available that give the impression of stone or metallics. The Venetian plaster effect is very glam and although time intensive is as easy to do a painting and sanding, especially on an accent wall in a kitchen or bath.

Well, I am three years into remodeling my first home as well. Do not make the mistake we made and start too many projects at once. We now have a bunch of half done rooms, and hardly any that are actually finished.
Start out easy, paint or wallpaper. even rooms that you are eventually going to completely do over. That way they look better for little money and will keep until you re-do the room.
Then pick one room at a time and make a list of projects inthat room. Like one weekend I am going ot do this and the next weekend I will do this. Budget you available time. If you are a couple budget your time between the two fo you. Like we will budget that this weekend he will dry-wall a room and tape it, the next weekend he moves on to something else and I prime and paint it.
Good luck, and trust me.... it will be three times as much work as you thought and cost more than you anticipate..... However, there is nothing that is more rewarding.....
Good luck......

I am doing an old house getting it ready to sell. The best and neat thing I did was to paint the Ceiling white and white down 3 inch on the walls. When the paint dried I put a 2 inch blue painters tape around the walls right next to the Ceiling. I then painted the walls a light Gray up and a little over my blue tape. I then pull the tape off and you get this awesome small white border around the room with nice crisp lines. Bonus is that you don't get any gray on your Ceiling. It is so easy but it looks so neat. PS. I am a really a ready bad painter but this helps a lot.

A fresh coat of paint will always make things look good. Cleaning the carpets and scrubbing the floors can make things look and smell cleaner. Putting up new drapes and blinds.

PAINT...wainscoating, lighting changes, walls that can be removed that are not weight bearing...putting your money into the kitchens and baths increase the value of your home the most...but a fireplace is a great addition
