I've often wondered that myself. All I know is that it is "Pig Latin"...

"ix-nay" is the Pig Latin version of the word "nix", which people use to mean "erase" or "don't mention". They always use it in a phrase where they are trying to tell someone not to say something because they don't want another person who is present to hear it.

Example:
(Imagine that Peter and John are having a conversation when Jill arrives. Jill doesn't know that Peter and John are talking about her surprise birthday party.)
Peter: So, are you coming to the party?
Jill: What party?
John: Ix-nay on the arty-pay!

and this means that John doesn't want Peter to mention the party around Jill. Supposedly the use of Pig Latin means that Jill won't understand what he is saying but of course she does. So people just use it as a joke nowadays.

It's "pig latin" for nix, meaning 'cut out' or 'omit'.

Pig latin is a psuedo code language in which the first letter of a word is placed at the end of the word with "ay" added. As in:

igpay atinlay

I learned it when my grandfather used it to tell dirty jokes when I was a kid.

It's Pig Latin for "no." Pig Latin is a made up language. Here's how you do it:

Nix... take the first N and put it at the end. Put "ay" on the end of that n. So Nix becomes ix-nay.

Another example... "Yes" would be "es-yay." "Pizza" would be "izza-pay."

It's a type of slang known as pig latin, and it has nothing to do with latin.

You change any word to pig latin by taking the first letter of the word and moving to the end, they adding "ay". So, ixnay means nix, or no, enough, cut it out.
