You can go out and buy a straightening iron. The "ceramic" ones are the best, and if you're not afraid to spend a little more then the "tourmaline" ones are even better. You have to make sure that you set the heat at an appropriate setting for your hair texture and thickness. The more coarse and thick your hair is the higher the setting you will need. They also have straightening irons that dry your hair while straightening it. That would save your hair from extra damage because you would not be damaging it with a blow dryer followed by a straighener. In addition to the straightening iron they sell spray that you can put on your hair prior to straightening it to make it easier to straighten reducing the amount of time the heat is actually on your hair. You can also go the extra mile and buy a smoothing shampoo and conditioner. Matrix Sleek Look is an excellent shampoo and conditioner to use prior to straightening your hair. They also sell the protecting spray.

Anything you do to your hair damages it. Excessive use is what you want to stay away from. Go to a professional stylist to either perm it straight or blow it and them flat iron it. You should probably get it blown and flat ironed first to make sure you'll like it. Then if you do, you can get it permed for more permanent results.
