I guess there are basically two situations. Acute iron poisoning results from accidental or purposeful swallowing of iron pills, including iron containing vitamins. Chronic iron toxicity results from a rather rare inherited condition called hemochromatosis. Affected individuals gradually accumulate iron in their body tissues, causing damage to heart, liver, pancreas and gonads.
