Volvo's overall especially the older ones are good reliable transportation. 200k miles really isn't much especially for an 88. Have the car checked over. I'm not sure what model you are looking at so I cant tell you whats bad or good about it. I do see a lot of customers come in everyday with older models with 2-400k miles for nothing more than maintenance. which ever model it is, it will be waaaaaay more reliable than you eclipse. Good luck with your Volvo

i own a repair shop, and you know that's a lot of miles for any vehicle, but the Volvo has been well known for going at least 400 k ,and giving good service,so you might be alright on that part of it,but i do this 6 days a week for a living and i do get my fair share of them to repair, after 200 k they do give some problems, but then any vehicle is going to do that, all you can do is use good judgment on this one, since i cant see the vehicle and rate it,you,ll have to be the judge on this one, make sure that car doesn't have a ton of problems now , 600 is a good price for that vehicle,if it runs good and drives good ,and you think it will be alright ,you might want someone else to look at it with you, they might notice something that you don't on it,id be sure before i bought it,it sounds like a good car but the mileage is a little high, good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

well volvo's are awesome, it has alot of miles, but the car it self is a good car, very safe, just i dont think its wutt you should go for, seeing that you dont have alot of money to toy with, if the engine gives out, or a part goes on it, there isent many in the junk yards, and so parts have to be specially ordered, and when you get into that, the price for parts jump, i would try and look around abit more, and see wutt is out there, remember, they want to sell it to you, so they will make it sound like an awesome deal, but seeing the position you are in, an 88 volvo with 200,000 miles dont seem like the car you should jump on!

Does it run well? What about the brakes and tires?
If it is reasonably good condition, buy it. However, see if you can get it for $400 - $500 first.
You should be prepared to do some maintenance on the car and that extra hundred bucks will come in handy.

If you don't feel safe in a 1998 eclipse, what makes you think you'll feel safer in a car that is 19 years old that is going to start breaking down? Don't Do it and stay with your car, why would you want to do that anyways? Your supposed to go from old to new not new to old
