The theory is that they blow ions into the air which neutralize allergens, odors, and other bad stuff. Sounds like a lot of hooey to me; but they certainly look cool and that's worth the money alone IMNSHO.

My Mom got me one for Christmas. I keep it on all the time. To be honest with you, I can't tell that it does anything for my health. It is nice to look at when it is nightime, but that is about it. I guess if somebody had allergies or something it might be helpful to them. They are kinda pricey also.
