I was trained and served out a 4-year enlistment in the Army in less time. If these people are so anxious for self-governance, why, in the name of Allah, can't they get a handle on policing themselves?

I'm aware of the ethnic tensions. It just seems if the established government is in control of 10's of thousands of trained, equipped soldiers/police, they should be able to handle the job we're doing for them right now.

And Nancy, I see where you're coming from. But if that's the only reason, why not just cool it until we pull out and then resume attacks on the "puppet" government?

The answer above me is dead on. I worked with the Iraqis. Some units are ready and others are not. They have some experienced troops in the units but not enough in the newer ones. They have to be seasoned and to be successful they have to put aside many of their cultural beliefs. It is not something that can happen quickly.

The question is, if everyone in the division you were in, all started training at the same time, officers included, how long do you think it would have taken to make that division combat ready ?

And I mean ALL started boot camp on the same day.

No Corporals, no Sgt, no Sgt Majors, no Captains, no Colonels, no Generals.

You start out with just Pvt's and 2nd Lt's.

You have to remember, almost all the Iraqi army were Baathist and are not allowed in the new Iraqi army.

So they are pretty much starting from scratch.

The problem is not about training them, trust me Iraq already had trained soldiers when US attaked the problem is that there are two different major groups of Muslem people that do not agree with each othere. The minority group, the rich people (I think they were sheeye) were in power before US invaded Iraq but after the invasion the majority group (Sonnies) came in power so they can not get a handle of their country because those two groups are fighting against each othere. It is like US civil war same country same people but different opinion.

The Iraqi soldiers are well trained. Your government needs another excuse to stay in Iraq, so they claim they are training them. The problem is who are the US troops training? The terrorists or the militia. Can you tell them apart?

The Iraqis already know how to equip and defend themselves. You're misinformed. They are not children you know.

The trouble is they don't want a puppet government put in by us (the invaders). Would you?

And... What are the chances that a great number of them are insurgents in disguise getting trained by the U.S.
