Languages are good skills to master because they can help you get better jobs, learn more about other cultures, etc. Languages allow you to find a different way to let your feelings out, especially those you don't want others to know. I plan on mastering three languages. Set a goal and start learning!

People think of language as an art. However language is a structure and therefore a science. Learning a language involves analysis, memory, repetition and rehearsal. It is thus a microcosm of any learning experience. Learning how to analyze and learn a language gives you mental tools to learning other stuff - for example math or archaeology, etc. Learning language (even archaic languages such as Latin, Sanskrit and ancient Greek) also helps when learning modern computer languages, which have their own syntax, grammar and vocabulary. I have learned about ten languages and forgotten about five of them. Langauges I have learned and still speak well are: German, French, Afrikaans; while others I still speak though poorly are Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Tagalog. I have also learned and more or less forgotten: Swahili, Maori and Ndebele.

Learning your own language well helps you in communicating well with others, presenting yourself well, and understanding the communications of others. If you can persuade others ethically with language you can master almost any area of knowledge or business. You can also made lots of money by speaking or writing well. You can also help others who don't communicate as well as you do. I have written two best-selling books and though I didn't make heaps of money they have proved very useful when doing other projects, in other words when I present myself to funders or publishers I can say: hey look at these two books.

Language is a good skill to master because it improves our own thoughts, communication with others, and our appreciation of culture.

It comes in handy if you end up in a job where you need to talk with people . . .
It is surprising how many people say something that someone else takes completely differently than intended and mostly because the speaker used the wrong words.
