For example, I download and install an updated version of Firefox. Will I be doing something bad if I put the application in the recycle bin?

What you actually downloaded was the "Install" file. When it's run it installs all the necessary files to create an application on your computer. Once you have installed the application you can safely delete the "Install" file.

If you are talking about the actually program (the icon w/ the picture of the fox on it that says, "Mozilla Firefox," then yes, you would want to keep that. It is, however, ok to delete the installer icon. This is the icon that would have appeared after you downloaded firefox, but before you installed it.

Why would you delete it right after you installed it?

if the program has an uninstall feature, use that. otherwise, use the add/remove programs feature in your control panel.
