Costco is good? your mean price? It depends. Sometimes price can be better at a retail store (Circuit city, Best Buy, Sears) when the tv is on sale and has a rebate.
I was able to buy a better set (same brand - Panasonic but next higher model) than what Costco had for LESS at Sears. So do your homework. Don't go to costco because you think it will be the lowest price because sometimes it isn't.

My favorite large screen TV by FAR is the :
Sony KDL-40XBR2 40" Bravia XBR 1080p LCD HDTV
RAVIA XBR television was designed from the ground up to deliver the best of High Definition. For the larger screen sizes, this means not only HDMI⢠inputs with 1080p signal capability but also a full HD panel resolution of 1920 pixels horizontal x 1080 pixels vertical.
This amounts to over 2 million pixels—resolution that plasma panels are hardpressed to match, especially in 40 and 46-inch diagonal screen sizes. Sony's 2 million pixels are more than twice as many as 720p plasma HDTVs and more than five times that of plasma EDTVs. The difference is profound. For example, in order to show 1080i or 1080P High Definition signals, a 720P television must first downconvert the signal, losing more than 55% of the pixels in the process! BRAVIA XBR television's Full HD 1080 design delivers every pixel of performance from HD sources.
Amazon has it on sale now:
$2,239.98
You Save:
$860.01 (28%)
Good Luck!

Almost all of the units have nice pictures . . .
What is not nice are the units that malfunction in a bit over a year and have NO repair parts available.
Costco is known for carrying some brands that are not repairable later.
Get their return policy in writing - how they handle repairs and how they handle units that are not repairable and out of the 1 year warranty.
Sears also known for carrying units that are not repairable later and won't take them back if the 1 yr warranty is up.
Do you want to spend more than a $1000 for a TV that lasts 13 months & can't be fixed ?

Toshiba has a great 42" flat panel. I got it from Sam's Club for 1100.00. Hooked it up to the cable box and the remote took over, smart unit, great picture and user friendly.

shop around, prices vary from store to store and depends on the brand.
if your going to invest in a new tv, go big or go home when it comes to quality. go brand name, you can never go wrong with sony or its rivals.
the size of the TV depends on the size of the room it will be in, and on your budget. 42 is a decent size tv for most rooms, not too big for smaller rooms, and not too small.
look around, best buy, pc richards, etc. they change prices every week, so dont settle for the first one you see
