We always advise patients to eat soft foods for a day or so, then resume their normal diets just avoiding chips, hard or crunchy foods for awhile. The dry socket develops when a clot doesn't form, or it gets disturbed after the extraction. If you had your extraction today, stick to cold drinks of tea, milk, juice, milk shakes, or ice cream, smoothies or warm soup with soggy crackers. Remember nothing carbonated, or through a straw, and if you smoke, don't! And if you don't, then don't start the habit today! Day 2 you can rinse your mouth with warm salt water, and start eating more normal foods. Good luck and I hope I was of some help.

well normally you can resume eating as soon as you feel up to it (24 hrs)..just chew or eat on the other side of your mouth or in the back if it's in the front..
your dentist should have told you to apply warm towels every 20 mins or so after extraction to alleviate the chance of dry socket and helps the pain and recommended tylenol if you do
start gargling with warm salt water(1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) 24 hrs after extraction, after meals and before bed. Do not use commercial mouth rinses, they may irritate it
if you get "dry socket" go back to the dentist, he needs to see it...... do not smoke either ..if you do
