Depends on the religion, to Christianity history is more vital.

Actually BOTH, because Science is beginning more and more to prove History. Not just the History we've been told about America or such in school either, about the Bible and the validity of things that it says happened.

Such As: [Just to name a couple]

The great flood & Noe's ark.

The parting of the Red Sea and Moses & God's people passing through it. [Recently a man actually FOUND a chariot and more under the Red Sea, where Moses & the Children of Israel were suppose to have passed through it.]

As a believer, I myself study both History & Science. I am a very overanalytical person when it comes to both. Sometimes this is not a good thing to be in life situations, but when it comes to Science and History it is actually a PRO and not a CON.

History, if you consider the fossil record, is a bane to religion. Science -- hah! Sorry, the only thing vital to religion is the mind numbing multitudes that refuse to think for themselves. Good thing for religion that there's no shortage of those.

Certainly not science as it has carbon dated dinosaur bones and found them to be millions of years old. Religion hates science, even the Pope had cautious words about it. Religion can distort history to suit it's purpose but they can't distort scientific discoveries.

Both science and real history are deadly to religion.

History. People believe it because their parents believed it and their parents believed it and their parents and their parents and their parents believed it. Also the supposed miracles of the bible are only considered miracles because they were incapable of explaining them back then and therefore they must be inexplacable. History distorts everything.

With religion you have nothing.

With God anything is possible, yes I would say history has taught us a lot if we choose to accept it or not is up to us.

History is written by the victorious....so history. Science is like math. You either come up with the correct answer, or you don't. History is subjective. This is why most Christians hardly ever hear about the horrible things the Christian Church has done in the past

Verily I say unto you...dogma, pedantry and propaganda...this drives the flock as the shepherd would have it...

at least for the masses...there are some who actually look at both history and science.
