I don't know how old your dog is. It is easier to train to use the litterbox when they are very young. Train in the same way that you would if house breaking. When training to go outside you take the dog to the exact spot you want them to go and then wait.
The same principles would apply for the litter box. After eating or upon waking, put the dog in the litter box and encourage them to g go with whatever word you use for "go potty". You would praise the dog for going and give a reward of some kind like a treat or special toy.
Purina makes a litter product for dogs called Second Nature. You can go to their website and you may be able to request a free video of "how to" litter train your dog.

Yes you can train a small dog to use a litterbox, but it would be just as easy to puppy pad train it in the house. The puppy pads have a specific odor that only dogs can smell and they use those pretty quickly once you start training them.

Yes, but it wasn't really a matter of training the dog, it was more having the dog watch the cats use it. The dog learned that in the winter when it was really cold it was simply much more convenient. So my suggestion to you would be make sure you've got a good cat for a role model and your dog should have no trouble at all understanding what that little sandbox is used for.

Absolutely! Although, they may not like cat litter, They have "pee pads" that you can put in the litterbox to help her understand where she is suppose to go. After she is comfortable with the litterbox and understands that is where her place to go is, you can remove the pee pads and use shredded newspaper. Or you can continue with the pad, if you like.

Yes, If YOU are well organized. and start with a lot of patience when it is very young . I have seen it done . Toy breeds of course. I know a Lady that had her Old Eng. use an appliance box cut out on one side. She would go into the box on the paper. Good Luck I still think one should learn to go outside if at all possible

Yes. I'm not sure of the exact method, but it is becoming increasingly common especially in city apartments. Consult your veterinarian or the product (i.e. the litterbox) manufacturer for better information.

yes, any animal born in a litter(cats, dogs rodents, bunnies, etc) have a natural drive to not soil where they sleep, and will readily go in one spot. It would have to be low and big though. The real challenge would be to keep the dog from playing in the poop, like eating it or rolling in it. If you have cats too, forget trying to keep the dog from eating kitty box crunchies! That is a loosing battle.
