She is 1 1/2 years old. She normally weighs about 55-65 lbs. She is always excited. Even now. You can just see her ribs and her hips and ribs stick out farther than her stomach. She was never fat, but now she looks sick. I don't know what to do. Please help.

I love Bassets. They do not have a problem with eating (and getting fat). Please take her to the vet ASAP!

OK you should take her to the vet. Just because you wormed her doesn't mean you got the right medication. Over the counter wormers are great if you know which worms are infesting your dog but if you don't then you could be doing more harm than good. Dogs get many different types of worms and truly only a vet can check her stool to be 100% sure which she has if she has any at all. If she is that skinny why haven't you taken her to vet sooner?? Their may be something else going on.
Sorry but on my scale of a good dog owner of 1 to 10 you only get a 4.

Just because a dog loses weight does NOT mean that they have worms and they should NEVER be dewormed without getting a fecal done and if they do have worms the vet can perscribe the proper medication. OTC dewormers aren't effective, likely aren't even for the worm(s) the dog has and can be very dangerous to your dog..this is even more of a risk if the dog has an underlying medical issue going on.
This dog needs to be seen by a vet and get a complete exam including bloodwork and a fecal..there are many illnesses taht can cause weight loss, some are very serious.

Either... it is true that sometimes dogs of the same sex have territory problems. But I have 2 females and one male (basset hounds) and they all get along fine. The females are some what territorial over food sometimes but no major problems. Either will be fine... Bassets are so laid back! Make sure you get it fixed! And also look for a good breeder...

Hello.

Your dog needs to see a veterinarian immediately. You should not be trying to diagnose what is wrong with her by asking strangers online anymore than you would try to diagnose a problem with yourself on the internet.

With that said, there are many, many serious even deadly reasons why your dog may be losing so much weight (failing to thrive) and worms are only one of them. Also, be aware many commercial deworming products can do more harm than good and should never be given to a sick animal. Like wise, it may be something as simple a poor quality diet or not feeding her enough for her daily energy requirements.

I don't mean to sound insensitive or like I am lecturing you. I am a veterinary technician and see a lot of sad situations that could have been prevented if the owner had only sought medical help promptly. Instead of listening to anecdotal information from untrained individuals I urge you to take your dog in for a physical exam.

If you love you dog (and obviously you do or you would not be concerned) then you owe her annual medical check ups at a minimum anyway. If you can't afford them than I would suggest you look into low income clinics (contact your local shelter) or consider rehoming her with someone who can afford to give her the proper medical care she needs. Responsible pet ownership includes good health care.

I hope this helps, if you are having financial difficulties and are unable to find a low cost clinic referal in your area please email me at ramonaa1@yahoo.com and I will try to help you find one.

take her to the vet. It may be something other than worms, or it may be a type of intestinal parasite that you can't get rid of with Over the counter de-wormers. But i think a visit to the vet is the best thing for you dog.

She may have coccidia... it makes them very thin. You should have your vet do a fecal exam to verify this... treatment is fairly easily. A dog I got had this and she just got thinner and thinner until we realized the problem and treated it, now she is gaining weight.
