Phew. Real love is going to be different for every different couple. So that's a big question. But in general here's what I think...
True love allows you to remain yourself, keep doing your own interests and retain your own personality and opinions and thoughts, while sharing much of your life, and yourself, with the other person. true love is a give and take situation - sometimes one person depends on the other, sometimes the opposite - both people have to be willing to contribute to and support the well-being of the other without giving so much of themselves that they lose their sense of self, of without taking so much from the other person that this happens to the other.
It's a commitment, something worked out over a long time, and not something that happens instantly.
It requires real effort because no one, and therefore no love, is perfect.

Love is something you have to work at. Relationships take effort, and you won't always feel that happy, fluttery sensation that you feel when you first start the relationship. True love means that you're willingto stay with this person even when you're not happy with them. It means you're willing to sit down and talk about problems in the relationship and find a way to work those problems out. True love means that even when you hurt each other and even when you stop feeling "in love," that you're still willing to stick together and talk things out, because you know that something brought the two of you together and that your partner is worth fighting for.
In short, you know it's true love when you're willing to fight for the relationship even when it doesn't always FEEL like true love.

You will just know. It's sounds silly but it is true. I love my wife and son more than anything in the world. It's something you can't put into words.

Time. You have to go through a lot of experiences together, and not just dating experiences, where you are both working to impress each other. If you're still in love when you've seen each other bitter, discouraged, sick, flat broke, angry, and hurt, then it might just be real. Long engagements are good for this reason.

When your own happiness is made by helping that person be as comfortable and content as possible. Basically, when it's no longer about you.
