sprinkle a little lime or lemon juice on it to keep it from turning brown. Wrap it in some Saran wrap and leave on the counter for up to three days to let it ripen.
You can also fry it, and it'll taste ripe that way.

Raw? They're all raw, is it Ripe, soft to the squeeze of you fingers. If it's hard as a brick bat toss it, avocado's don't ripen in the fridge even if the seed is still in it. If it's ripe make a avocado, cheese and tomato Omelet

If you haven't discarded the seed, leave it on the seed, and wrap it in plastic wrap. The seeds keep most of it from going all gross and squishy.
You can use an underripe avocado chopped up in salads, to top quesadillas, In salsa, etc. It's not a total waste...

You cut an unripe avocado in half? Well...you could salt and pepper it and grill it or pan sear it? If you fear that it is really unripe, toss it and pick some ripe ones up the next time you go to the store.
