Why is it that some people do not respect teachers and all they do? I understand that there are some people that should not teach. Also many people have had bad experiences in thier own school experience. What I can't understand is some of the remarks that people in the internet, in the community, and in schools make. For example one individual here stated that "teachers are people that can't get real jobs". What kind of crap is that?

I think teachers are heros. All that work, caring and effort toward someone else's kids....and with very low pay....yes, definitely in the hero category!

Unfortunately it's the bad teachers that ruin it for the good ones. Far too many go into the profession who don't the right "skill set" to be a teacher. Simply knowing subject matter is not the defining criteria for being a good teacher, but our system requires for the most part a teaching degree to become a teacher. Teaching is a natural talent, you either have it or you don't, and no amount of education in the subject of education will make someone a good teacher.

I am a teacher. I make it my policy to not yell at the students and to treat each one with respect. There is never a situation where you should react in a way that escalates the problem. I care about each of my students and their futures. Some students definatley don't make it easy to care about them, but that is my job. I go to work at 8:30 every day and leave around 4:30. I spend the rest of the evening, except for Fridays and Saturdays, correcting and planning. I have two university degrees and have spent 5 years at the post secondary level to becoem a teacher. I don't want people to go around praising me for my work, but I agree with you when you ask why someone would say that teachers are people who can't get real jobs. Who taught the doctors what they know...a teacher. How did everyone who has a degree/diploma/etc get it...by going to school and being helped by a teacher. Yes, there are stupid teachers out there who really don't deserve the title, but don't paint all of us with the same brush. I think from your tone that you support teachers, I thank you.

You are right, some people are just jerks! I personally could never be a teacher, just because I simply have not the patience for it. Teachers are great, those people are just jealous because they don't have enough smarts to teach their children the stuff they learn in school. Don't let them get you down, blow them off and keep on doing your job! You're doing a job that requires alot of patience and tolerability (is that even a word?!), and it is great that there are some people out there who care enough about the children of the world who can do that kind of work! Keep it up!

I used to be a teacher in high school and minority of the students do not show respect. I decided to work in the industry because of the discrepancy in the salaries.
Teachers should be respected because they are the backbone of the youth's education. If there are no teachers there will be no professionals, e.g. Chemists, Engineers, etc.

when I was a little girl...I wanted to be a teacher....
I used to line up my teddy bears and dolls and act like they were my students...and I would take a color marker and write on the mirror as if it were a board....I had fun doing that....
well now I'm grown but I am not a teacher.... because I don't know how good at it I would be...I know that teachers get paid so little and that is not fair...and u are right they don't get much respect...

I do not think people realize how much education it really takes to become a teacher. In California for example: after you get your B.A or B.S. you have to complete an additional year of teaching courses, (at graduate fees) (that is why most have Masters) pass a very tough state test, have implecable record, have a CLAD or BCLAD (language acquisition courses to teach students whose primary language is one other than English, or take a series of exams in a foreign language as well , to prove biliteracy)and apply for a credential. Once you obtain that credential and your are hired you have to work at least two years before you can be tenured and then only if you have good evaluations. You are evaluated by a Principal every year who observes you three to four times teaching, you have to present him/her with detailed lesson plans and you have to meet a few times to discuss his/her findings and write a career plan. A teacher is never done with education, teachers must also renew their credential every five years, and to do so, a teacher must document at least 150 "professional hours" of courses and services rendered in order to enhance and improve their education. Now the course work and state exams for a multi-subject credential is different than for a single subject credential. There are credentials that allow you to teach grades K through 6 or 8 and those that allows you to teach grades 7 through 12. Now if you have a Masters you can teach College anywhere. The problem is that the pay is not good and most colleges are not hiring full time professors. Teachers have to make a living too, and it is very low in comparison with other professions when you compare the level of education a teacher has. Well, so teachers should be admired, respected and valued more in our society, because they teach those who become lawyers, doctors, teachers, etc, alike. They spend hours after their "teaching day"correcting papers and planning. They call parents and attend meetings, all on their own time. You tell me any other profession where an employee donates two to three hours daily to help those he/she services? Well, we do. I go to work every day at 8:00 and leave work at 6:00 or 7:00. I spend additional time at home every night grading papers, sometimes calling parents and planning. Sometimes I go to work on Saturdays as well. We also spend some of our weekends and part of our vacations taking classes and taking required seminars and in-services. We do not get paid for the time we are off, contrary to popular belief. Most of us are teachers because we care about the students we teach. And now our responsibility is more than before, we are also counselors, social workers and family therapists at times. We are not just responsible for the education of students, but also for their social and emotional development, as more and more children come from dysfunctional families or families where parents are not able to help with homework or just be there for their children because of their own limited education, or their work schedule, or lack of patience or parenting skills. If I make a difference in the life of just one child, then my career choice has been well worth it. Over the years I have had many students come back as adults and thank me. That is priceless. So to all of you out there who think we don't hold "real jobs", well , teaching is not a job, it is a commitment, it does not end when students go home, it is what we are not what we do. I teach because I want to not because I have to. I also hold two post-graduate degrees and have worked in banking, social services, family therapy and in the the private sector.

I was never a person who disrespected teachers, but I can honestly say that until I began substituting myself, I had no idea how difficult the job is. I give enormous credit to teachers -- they all deserve Medals of Honor.
