Those who rely on the internet to find companionship often have major initimacy problems in real life, and worse are those who only wish to speak their mind not even gaining companionship only gaining a conduit to exercise their views. The inability to let someone in translates to the IM because there is the possibility that they could be made vulnerable and hence could have the same injustices that caused the initial initimacy issues to arise. The masqurade of I don't want to be hit on or other excuses are translated to their real lifes where they also don't want to be burned and hence have stifled relationships. Those who allows IM are more than likely more functional in a real sphere becuase they can open up to strangers which is how you make connections in the real world. This is not a sweeping decree that everyone without IM access is emotionally crippled, but instead they may face only small initimacy issues, but still they face them and are defeated whether that only means internet IM or opening up to that cute date. Small behaviors can cause sweeping psychological change.

My privacy is very important to me, but besides when you start giving out too much personal information some computer genius may be able to track you down. There are plenty of whacko's out there.

Me the reason is that I don't want random people messaging me and I have no clue who they are. I really don't like IM too.

dunno. Probably because most of the time it is just some weirdo who wants to have cyber sex instead of intelligent conversation. Where I am from, how old I am, etc is no ones business I just want to talk about the issues.
