I had this same problem with my Chelsea, when she was a pup. I had a fairly tall trash can and she would tip it over and then get in the trash. I put a brick in the bottom of the trash can and then put the liner in the trash can. The trash can then became too heavy for her to knock over. Hope this helps.

My dog gets into the trash all the time. Just don't leave the trash out in the open. What I do (this may sound gross but) I put the trash can on top of the counter tops. If that doesn't work. Put him in a room he can stay in the whole time your gone, that DOESN'T have a trash can he can get into.

I think you should use a trash can that has a step to make the lid go up. Your dachshund shouldn't be able to open that kind of can up. And maybe you could put it in a corner so he can't really push it down.
Hope this helps.

trash is SOOO tempting for all dogs!
Put the trash where he can't get at it, that's about the only way.
I have used a round barrel type trash container with a lid, and fastened the lid with a bungie cord. Works outside to keep critters out of the trash, too.

My vet says that dogs do this when they stress over their owners leaving. Id put the trash can in a closet or put a baby gate up to keep your dog out of the kitchen or where ever your trash is.

If you look at Wal-Mart or other similar stores you can find a trash can that has a flip up lid. One of those that you have to step on the little thingy to get it to pop up. That is what my brother uses in his home to keep the dog out of the trash.

Put him in a crate while you are gone. If you aren't willing to crate train him, then put the trash where he can't reach it, and pick up anything he might get into. If not, he could ingest something that could make him very sick, or kill him. Dog proof your house.

My puppy did this for a while. I took my kitchen trash can and put it in the tub.
You could always hid it under the sink.
