My son is 14 months old almost 15. He is sick with a cold, I turned the vaporizer on and was wondering if it would be okay to give him a pillow as a prop. He does okay with them during naps and such. I thought it may help the coughing.

Oh Girl!! Do I feel for you!! spent just about 2 weeks with our three (ages 3,2 and 17 months) with this gawd awful cold!!

At 14-15 months there is no reason that he shouldn't be able to use a pillow, now whether he'll actually stay on the pillow is another thing ;) But yes it will help the coughing a bit.

Tylenol makes a children's cough and cold syrup (bubble gum flavored for kids aged 2-11 years...make sure it says on the box that it treats coughing as well) I give each of my older kids 1 tsp before bed and my 17 month old 1/2 tsp before bed. Generally if you can let him cough it out through the day it's a huge help (gets all the crap out of his chest) the medicine at sleep times just ensures that they get the rest they need.

If his appetite decreases badly turn to the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Apples & Toast) along with some pedialyte to keep him hydrated and nourished.

Other than that...just take time (if at all possible) to curl up on the couch with him, let him be a sick little guy, soaking up a little extra attention and comfort from Mom :) (besides...letting him sleep propped up against your chest will let him get some rest with minimal coughing too ;) hehehe)

With my daughter, I would also prop her head up during this kind of cold...I used a small pillow, and would check on her from time to time. Once she was out cold I would just remove the pillow, so I didnt have to worry about it while I slept

It is safer to prop up the crib (bed?) by placing books under the legs.

For younger babies I know it is not safe to put a pillow in the crib, nor under the mattress.

However if your son jumps around I'm not sure the book thing would work. Anyway the public health nurse said books under the legs.

If you are concerned about putting the pillow under his head, put it under the mattress on the end where he puts his head. Elevating your child's head while they sleep usually does help them when they are sick. But if he does fine with a pillow at nap, then he should be okay with one at night too.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says any baby over 12 months can use pillows and blankets.

He should be fine with the pillow, but you can also try putting a few pillows underneath his mattress so his head is higher than his feet. That method has always worked for me and mine..

A better way to raise his head if is to raise one side of the crib. You can do so by placing large blocks under the legs or folding a blanket under the mattress.

Using a pillow at this age should be fine . It should help him to breath better while sleeping and have a better sleep . Hope he gets better soon.

Put a small one at his back as he sleeps on his side so he will stay on his side. You can use a rolled towel too.
