Its called that because it is where Jesus preached and was sacrificed. Also, because God will dwell there in the future.

Wow this is a great question.

It was the Promised Land for the Children of God being led out of captivity from Egypt.

It is the place where Jesus was born, lived and died, baptized, performed miracles.

It is where so many of the events of the New Testaments took place.

That is just a small part however.

Basically, the origins of the three major western religions are tied to that whole area. Jews took over Canaan and declared that there is only one true god, theirs. Christianity originated with the apostles in the same area. Muslims have strong ties also. One of their most holy sites is in Jerusalem, the Dome of the Rock. I am not sure of the importance of that rock, but it is tied into the story of Mohammad.

It's where the Holy God Himself, Jesus Christ, walked and spoke and did miracles.
It is also the land that the Holy God promised would belong to Abraham and His descendants forever, whatever the Moslems say. (Number of times "Jerusalem" is mentioned in the Quran: 0).

Jehovah went on to say to him: ‘This is the land about which I have sworn to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, “To your seed I shall give it.” I have caused you to see it with your own eyes.’”—Deut. 34:4.

This land given to the Israelites was a sacred trust and they must be faithful to that trust, recognizing the divine wisdom

Jehovah strictly told the Israelites that if they obeyed these laws they would dwell in security, but if they betrayed this sacred trust

god told them to be obedient so they can be called a holy nation--

“And now if you will strictly obey my voice and will indeed keep my covenant, then you will certainly become my special property out of all other peoples, because the whole earth belongs to me. And you yourselves will become to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”—Ex. 19:5, 6.,

but they did not--- (jeremiah 31:32)

not one like the covenant that I concluded with their forefathers in the day of my taking hold of their hand to bring them forth out of the land of Egypt, ‘WHICH COVENANT THEY THEMSELVES BROKE, although I myself had husbandly ownership of them,’ is the utterance of Jehovah.”

It was the place where God appeared to Moses and gave the Tablets (the ten commanments was written on it)
God will build a new Jerusalem on that place.

Because that's where the Christians, Jews, and the Muslims believe that Jesus was cruxified. That's why everyone is fighting for the control of that area. Each religion wants to believe that their "savior" was there first.
