I have just switched all of my home computers over to ubuntu linux. You can download it at ubuntu.org or order the disk ---It's free. Also you get all the programs that you will ever need for free. Do try it as it can run and test it from the CD.

It depends on what you need and want out of a computer. For regular home computing, Linux can sometimes be a pain since a typical modem and often a cheap inkjet printer or scanner will not be able to be used, so you will need to be sure your hardware is compatible with whatever distribution you choose to use. Also, if you have any specialty software that you use, you will need to make sure there is an adequate replacement that you can rely on under Linux (there usually is, but sometimes this causes problems). Although modern Linux Desktops are as easy to use ans Windows or Macs, you will often find that you have to spend more time learning how to type in commands and learning a bit more about how your computer works, although the degree of knowledge you actually need is often overstated. I suggest getting a live CD like Ubuntu or Knoppix that you can run off of the CD so you can get a feel for it and see if you like it or not. You do get a lot mroe control and security but this comes at the cost of having to learn more.

I love http://ww.PuppyLinux.org It runs from a RAM disk if you have at least 256Mb of RAM. If you have a CD-RW or DVD-RW you can save any change to the same CD that Puppy resides on or a brand new disk. Once you reboot it is totally gone from system.
You can also install it to a FAT32 partition in a folder inside of windows if you choose.
If you need to recover data from corrupted windows partition with this version of linux and burn it to a CD\DVD.
Very versitle

I have SuSE Linux 10.0 and I love it, my only problem is trying to find a modem card that will work with it. It allows me to program in C without spending $1000 on a compiler and linker
