They are hated because the the media over sensationalizes every bad deed. People falsely believe they have locking jaws which make them believe they far more dangerous then other breeds. People are lazy so they believe whatever they are told to believe rather then doing some research and discovering the truth. It is not necessarily the breeder of these dogs that are the problem, it is the owners that fail to train and socialize the breed of dog they chose to keep.
People need to wake up because BSL is a really bad idea. The government is using the fear, ignorance and controversy that surround pitbulls to get it passed. Once pitbulls have been banned by law it opens the door to banning any breed of dog.
If people do not wake up and they continue supporting the ban of pitbulls and BSL, eventually we may not be able to own any dogs and the only place we will get to see a dog will be in a zoo.

You are absolutely right, it is the BREEDER NOT THE BREED. PitBulls can be very gentle dogs. It is all in how you train them. Alot of people give pitbulls a bad rap because they hear so much about the breeding to fight and nothing else. But, you can train a Poodle to be an attack dog. Same goes for Shih Tzu's, Pomeranian's, any dog can be trained to be mean and fight. I don't understand why Pit Bulls are the only ones in the spotlight right now. In Richmond Virginia, a little boy was mauled to death by a Rottweiler. Hell, I don't see people trying to ban those animals. Like I said, any animal can be trained to be mean, if they could stop the Backyard Breeders and the puppy mills and regulate them better, alot of this would stop.

I love Pits and I think that they are one of the sweetest breeds out there. I do not really understand why they have such a bad reputation, in my opinion the meanest breeds are Chihuahuas and Min Pins. I would trust a Pit with children way before I would trust a Chi or Min Pin (supervised in both instances).
I know that Pits have a higher ability to do more damage than the smaller breeds, but I have personally had to receive over 40 stitches when I was 5 because of a Lab just attacked me while I was walking around the neighbourhood with my dad and our dog. My leg is permanently disfigured because of it, and I really feel that if it wasn't for my father and my dog it would of been much much worse. The worse dog bites to people that I have seen have been from Golden Retrievers and Lab, and there have been a few kids in the city that I live in that have been seriously mauled by these breeds (3 of which were killed). Any breed of dog can bite, but it is wrong to say that pits are always aggressive.

i agree with you. Pit bulls are my favorite dog breed. I am going to adopt one when i can properly care for a dog. I have only met sweet loving pit bulls. I think the fear from pit bulls comes from the media. The news sometimes prints stories about 'pit bull attacks' when the dog in the attack was not actually a pit bull. But using the headline pit bull attack grabs more attention. I know my friend from work has a cocker/lab mix and a pit bull. The cocker mix bit her neighbor, and she reported it as a pit bull attack, and got printed as that. The news is also why my parents hate pit bulls. They hear all these stories and believe them, and believe that all pit bulls are vicious. But they have never ACTUALLY met a pit bull, they are too scared to even come close to one. SO they will spread around that pit bulls are bad vicious killing machines, when they have never even met a pit bull. I think most people who hate pit bulls are like this. If they are affraid of pit bulls they won't even give them a chance, and never get to see how sweet and loving they are. And other than the media, i think some people may have had a bad experience with a pit bull (which is usually the owners fault for teaching the dog to be aggressive, so they can feel tough). Though this is false judgement as well. ANy dog can be trained or tought to be aggressive. I have been attacked by a golden retriever who left scars on my face. A GOLDEN RETRIEVER! But i am not ignorant enough to write off all goldens as aggressive. I know it was a dog who was in a bad situation with bad owners. Lumping all dogs of a certain breed into one category is just wrong.
I want to add that a lot of people mistake other breeds as pit bulls. And also, pit bulls were bred for fighting. BUT they were bred for fighting DOGS, not humans. If anything pit bulls are more prone to dog aggression (which can usually be controlled with socialization), not human aggression.

I adopted a pit bull from the SPCA unintentionally. I was really leery of him since all I'd heard was how dangerous they are. However, from my own experience and from speaking to other pit owners, I'm convinced these are the biggest clowns in the canine world! I think any dog is capable of "turning" and it's idiotic to leave any breed unsupervised with children or elderly people.
If you own a pit, be respectful that others are scared of what they're heard. Keep the dog on a leash at all times, make him "sit" when people want to pet him (pits are jumpers, which scares people), and NEVER leave this dog unsupervised in your yard. Pits are escape artists, and they'll excitedly run up to a stranger, jump on them, and then you get sued for an "attack".
Just be responsible and mindful! People "hate" pits because of what they see on TV.
Cocker spaniels are the #1 biters in America, followed by German Shepards.

The best Dawg I ever had was a pit bull & german shepard mix.he was absolutly great.highly trainable, smart.would bark but wouldnt bite unless he had to.I breed the dogs I had to get him.I wanted a pit shepard mix,my brother offered me a 1000 dollars for him.
since people seem afraid of Pits, I am developing a breed of mixed shepard and pits. But even if a dog is trained right, any type of dog. sometimes they still will bite. Its up to the owner to train there dog. I would say that if a person has a pit, and people want to kill him, then the dog should be given a chance to prove themselfs,as being a trained dog, one that wont bite with out provocation, by having someone come by from the county. and test the dog in some way..a comprimize should be reached .If a dog is known to attack people then it should be put down if it was not protecting its territory. there home.their masters.in a proper manner.Thats why people have dogs sometimes, is to protect there persons and property and that should stay there right.to have these animals.

I own a pit bull, have raised him since he was 2 weeks old and he is now 5. He is the best dog. Stays home alone all day while I work and never does anyhting wrong in the house. He stays with my daughter when she comes home from school, they are the best companions. In my area, they get a bad rap because it seems to me like these young want to be "thugs" are the ones that are abusing these dogs. They need to be owned by responsible people who truly love them. BAN THE DEED NOT THE BREED!

in some cases its the breeders but in most cases its the owners of the pitbulls being uneducated about having this breed of dog alot of these people are going out and getting a pitbull without knowing anything about the breed or how to raise it just wanting to feel cool cause they own a pit but the media plays a major role in these stupid pitbull bans cause they have targeted our beautiful , loyal, loving breed of dogs p.s. could you put up a link to this website you mentioned i'd like to see what all negativity she's putting out there about our favorite breed of dog thanks sassy

I guess they got a bad reputation mainly because their owners breed them for fighting and were irresponsible in setting them loose. The dogs cant help themselves because they were trained to be fierce. I believe all dog breeds can be dangerous because their owners make them dangerous. Believe me... I was once almost bitten by a Bichon... cute as hell and quite dangerous. There is the saying Garbage in Garbage out. May be true for the pitbull.
