It's a common sociological fact that when people look to religious leaders and support them, they tend to do so rather lavishly. Very few religions are free of that... the POINT is that the monks who live in and care for those temples generate a mind that is free from attachments to such things. You don't see them running around in Armani and Gucci, etc.

Wat Pah Pong and Wat Pah Nanachat are two famous monasteries from the Thai Forest tradition. They look pretty plain to me.
