I know this seems like a big deal, but the truth is, if this is the biggest problem you have this week, it will have been a pretty great week! Of course, that probably doesn't really help what you are feeling... so:
Chances are you are best to ignore it as much as possible and not say too much. The bigger deal you make of this, the bigger deal it will be. If someone says they heard something about you liking this person, you can simply act a little exasperated, and say that you stuck up for him because someone needed to, but that you aren't interested in him in that way; leave it at that. Or, if someone asks you if you like him, you can just say "no." If you can leave it at just a no, do that (as I said, the less you say, the better).
You did the right thing by sticking up for him. Feel good about that. There is a chance this will all be forgotten come Monday... and if not, keep any comments short and simple and don't let people goad you into making it more than it is (which is just something you can be teased about).

I'm the kind of person who never talks crap behind people's back. I never start conflicts and I try to avoid them. One time two people came up to me saying I was talking crap about them. One was notorious for fighting (And I didn't know them,) I told them that I didn't know them and therefore would not have any reason to speak badly about them. The other one I was more familiar with. I told that one that if they wanted to fight, come alone and don't bring friends to do their dirty work, and that I had not done anything wrong. I knew they were in fact the one talking badly about me behind my back. Luckily I am an intimidating person, even though I'm one of the nicest, down to earth, honorable people you could possibly meet. I also have a calm mentality and I calmly walked away knowing I was safe to do so. The guy you are talking about seems like he is looking for someone, ANYONE to fight. He is mad at the world. You need to be careful around these types.

Well, don't start a rumor about your friend because two wrongs don't make a right. The only way to make people stop is if you ignore them Although they may continue for a while, they might say " Oh, If she is ignoring us, maybe she really doesn't like him!" Some ignorant people may do differently, so just slap or punch them!

Just ignore the rumor. Roll your eyes when you hear that rumor. Play it off as if you don't care. Start getting a little closer to the guy that you really do like and have your friends see that.
Nobody really cares about who you like or don't like. It's just something to tease you about, no one really believes those types of rumors anyways...somebody likes somebody all the time and it changes constantly.

It's ok!
ALl you need to do..this id the most simple answer and it works believe me!!
COMPLETELY IGNORE IT!
Act like it never happened and go on.
But flirt with the guy you do like!
He really won't care.
Don't even talk to your friend about what they said.
If you act like it's no problem so will everybody else.
GOOD LUCK!
