I've heard the macro lens is great for taking portraits, I was wondering if it is still good to get the portrait 50mm Canon lens, or if I don't need it because the Sigma macro would work fine. Will I get better results with the 50mm?

Both will work for portraits. I think it's more a question of focal length and capabilities--if you're going to do portrait shooting indoors, the 105mm may be too long (some find the 50mm too long indoors) and are you going to want to do some macro photography (the 50mm will not work anywhere near as well as the sigma).

Why not get both? The 50mm is only $80 at bhphotovideo.com.

Yea I have never had the best experience with 3rd party lenses either. If you have the money, get Canon lens becasue they are made by Canon, and you will get quality. 3rd party cut corners somewhere so their auto focus is not as fast as Canon, they may use the same glass for all their 105mm and jsut change the mount for it to fit a Canon or a Nikon so the focal point might not even match with where the sensor is.

The 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens. I tried it out but I need a more telephoto lens so I just brought the 70-200mm f/2.8 L lens. The auto focus is fast on the 50mm and it has sharp pictures. If you need more of a telephoto lens get the 100mm that Canon makes check around try them out at your local camera store and see if you like it.

I have never had good results with Sigma lens. Others may have, so don't just take my opinion on it. That's just my 2 cents worth.
