Yes your short term memory, and the process of moving it to long term is the first to go. I think it has to do with the fact that the memories that you have had for 60 years have very strong connections, while anything new is just that temporary - it can help if when you hear something repeat it several times over for several days and that will help to move it to long term memory

Yup it's true because the memory hasn't been embeded in your brain for years and years. It's funny I remember breaking my leg when I was 2 but not if I locked the front door this morning before work.

yes, it has to committed to permanent memory but if you forget it before that can happen then it so long. it takes several days for things to be placed in permanent memory. depends on how much the new information is used.
