In one of my theatre classes we were discussing and doing cold readings from a play called "The Laramie Project". It's a play about what happened to Matthew Shepard. To those of you who don't know, Matthew Shepard was beaten beyond recognition, and then dragged out to a field and tied to a fence and abandoned by his attackers. He hung on that fence for six days until he finally died.

Then as if that wasn't enough, people PICKETED his funeral!!! What kind of scum do we have on this Earth??? What in the world were they protesting against anyway? I mean, usually people protest because they want something. What did these people want from a boy who was murdered? Did they not want him having a funeral or something? What was it?

I try to be positive about life. I believe people are generally good, but are easily corrupted, yet easily made better too. But I don't know what kind of "corruption" would make anyone beat a man half to death & then string him up like a side of veal!

The QUESTION by the way is what were these people wanting, with their protests?

Some people just get bored and just protest without knowing what they are protesting against.

I am sorry you learned about this, and sorry that humanity has not changed in these 2000+ years.
I saw a terrible picture of a small Vietnamese girl running down the street naked during supper - during all the 'Nam coverage.
I also watched the real footage of the German death camps - that people say are fake. If it wasn't for movies depicting the "true" west or another culture, say the bible years, no one would see that humanity has not changed at all, just take 10 minutes and Mr. Khan could use a rifle just as well as any solider of today military.
Every generation has horrific pictures and stories.
It is part of our nature to kill other things. It's hard wired in our existence.
Please do not confuse out "tools" with being advanced humans. We made most of these tools to control or kill each other.
I am glad you are revolted by your fellow humans that can't control themselves, hopefully you can learn a way to stop them at the gene level, so we never hear stories like this again.

Yeah, I'm right there with you. I cried when I heard about what happened and when I saw the movie Boys Don't Cry which was based on his story. It makes me sick that people think its okay to kill another human being based on religion. I am Christian myself but I have respect for everyone. I look at it like this. Its the holy spirits job to convict. God will judge. Its our job to love. Its funny how people commonly miss the second greatest commandment in the bible. But, I did not know they picketed his funeral. Those people will have to face God and the inevitable, karma. I just don't understand what about homosexuality brings out the worse in other people. It's disgusting to me.

I HATE people who picket funerals. They have no respect for the dead or their grieving families. I think they should be locked up. I have personally been to funerals where some nut jobs have decided to picket because the person who has passed away 1. Doesn't share their religion or 2. Is homosexual and they think it's evil or 3. The person served in the military and they think that is wrong.

I believe that the torture and murder of this young man was committed over his being Gay. The community he lived in was very Fundamental in their religious beliefs. Gay was perceived as being unacceptable to God and humanity, someone who needed to leave their community and not lead other good young men astray. Gay was an affliction of evil. The belief is that you can't be Gay and be of God. Of course, this is a travesty in both thinking and acting. I personally believe that we humans do alot in the name of God that GOD doesn't own or condone.

You ask what corruption causes this behavior? God said to love all people; do good to those who do evil to you. If you are filled with the Love of God, how can you behave out of hatred? If you are filled with the Love of God, then you love the person, even though you may not love all their behaviors. Love promotes tolerance for differences and different viewpoints. Love would never take the law into its own hands and do what happened to that young boy. It is the extreme in any religion that turns into intolerance of differences and wants to punish harshly anyone not following their true path.. This is why jehad of the Muslin religion is the extreme of that religion and practices the demise of the "unbelievers" or those who do not think and act as they do. Religion in its extreme is really a religion of hatred and exclusivity. Very dangerous stuff! I think extreme religion is a gross distortion of God's love twisted into man's ability to do evil thinking and acting.

Those Westboro Baptist church people are mentally ill and need to be commited. They make me ill, I really wish they'd turn mormon or something, quit making christianity look bad. KKK and the skinheads would be no loss either. There are sick people in this world who hide behind the name of God. The only good thing is, ultimately, they'll pay the price.

cruelty exists in the world and it always will. look at the holocaust or the treatment of blacks during slavery. maybe someone on their own would not do something like this but when joined by others, it gives them fuel and they become like a tide of hate. their hate cannot be justified even by themselves. that doesn't take away the fact that others exist that have a heart and brain of their own that lets them decide when something is just cruel. what we have to do is check ourselves and decide whether we join the tide or walk against it

I am familiar with the Matthew Shepherd story, and I also am very saddened by the ignorance and brutality of his tragic murder. Unfortunately, he is one of many hate crimes and murders. I can't imagine hating another human being so much that murder was an option. I believe that "what goes around, comes around" maybe we won't see it happen, but I firmly believe that people with so much hate in them, will be one day brought to justice.

You have a compassionate heart. Never let that be taken from you, but learn to understand that people are only the sum total of the causes and conditions that make up who they (and others) label themselves as.

Ego, self-cherishment, arrogance... all these things have a habit of getting their way. Be altruistic and learn wisdom and then teach, protect the ones you can and learn great compassion.
