We had troops placed in Europe because of the Cold War. Why are we still there, also in Japan because of the type of constitution Japan drew up after the war.

We are still in many countries because if we leave there will be a vacuum. China and Russia may well fill that vacuum. There are many other nations that would like to expand. We provide security to those nations with a small military or without one at all. We are also there because of the agreements drawn up during WWII. These agreements were part of the surrender of Japan and Germany. We have become the policemen of the world by default. We also need to be there for our own security as well. Take a good look at all the lunatics around the world. We can't leave anytime soon unless these countries want us out. By the way there are plenty of military personnel available besides the ones in Europe.

We are pulling troops from Europe. My friend is in the Army and he been deployed to Iraq majority of the year for the last four years.
You just don't hear about this because it isn't news quality.
