INSIGHT: Recognizing they have a problem. Willingness to ask for help. Asking what is the next step and finally taking the necessary concrete action.

Showing vulnerability is important by recognizing and asking for help. Once this is done the hard work begins but stay positive recognizing and accepting there is help. This world is full of former addicts who have gone through the process and are abstaining from drugs and leading a happy and healthy life.

One practise used in HARM REDUCTION is writing a 'Dear John' letter used to break up a relationship-in this case the individuals' most important relationship is their drug of choice.

I'm not an expert, but the following I think are pretty important:
1) They recognize that drugs are a problem in their life
2) They express interest in getting away from drugs

you ask them if they need help, and if they do they will ask you for help, and you watch to see if they are actually following through with what they say they are going to do or if they keep flaking out or lying.

not all people use the 12 step program. Some people will get a counselor or read books to help them though they say a support group is strongly encouraged.

When they start talking suicide. I was one they gotta really want it 100% If not it won't work. I don't know what they R on if you want to email I be able to help you more. There R some important things missing out of your question. Hope I gave you something to think about .

When they are willing to listen to someone who knows what they are talking about. Usually this is someone who has been there and are now doing good now and able to help others. One that you trust and they have to be able to trust you. Who ever you are hang in there! You can email me if you wish.

I would think the first sign is that they acknowledge and admit they need help.Same thing for alcoholics.
