My female students (sophomores in high school) are really into Jay Zhou or Jay Chow as English speakers know him. They were giving me all sorts of gossip on his now defunct relationship with another singer, Jolin. Jolin is also very popular, but with the male students. Other popular singers are S.H.E., David Tao Ze, Micheal Wong, Andy Lau, Wang Lee Hom (raised in the states), Wang Fei (Fay Wang), Wilber, F4, and many others.
Also, Chinese people love basketball. This surprised me when I first moved here. I thought Yao MIng was a fluke, but they have the CBA, Chinese Basketball Association here, which is where Yao Ming played before going to Houston. You see people playing basketball all the time here, just as much as in the states. Many of my students know as much as American high schoolers about the NBA. They argue over which players are the best. When I asked them who their favorite person was, many of them named NBA players like Kevin Garnett, Tracy McCready, and Kobe Bryant. Many of them sneak basketball magazines into my english classes inside their english books. So it could be interesting how a Western sport like basketball has gained so much popularity here.

China has a lot of custmos and cultures! So don't worried about this!At first you should know Chinese New Year.On that day peple get up very early, they go shopping and clean their houses, then they go to their father's house with gifts. This is also a holiday which you can get together with your families.they watch TV together and make food in the afternoon.Chinese usually eat dumplings on Spring Festival with other nomal dishes!then everythings ready ,you just wait the new year's coming !About 8o'clock the CCTV has a very big evening party which will show online !so don't miss it .at twelve in the evening the most important thing is comming !People greet each other with Happy New Year !and also some good words ,young people can get red evelops from their parents or people who get married alreay. Then they'll play the firecrackers,it has a lot of fun!you can one day and you'll find how exciting it is!At last familis will eat dumplings together and hope to have a new life in the new year!depends on chinese calender this year is the pig year and it is also the last year of this term so you'll wait another 12 years to have the pig year again!so someone said this year will be the luckest year of all !so i hope you can get a good luck too!

Hi - i also live in china ...but my life here is much different than those that live in the south ...i live really far up here in the north !!
This is an interesting topic .....the FILTH here ...and the dirty , disgusting , bad habits ....they spit /hoarck EVERYWHERE AND ANYWHERE !!! It's something that i still to this day cannot stand ....EVEN IN RESTAURANTS .....i've even paid for my food and got up and walked out ! The sidewalks here are covered (spitting is now banned in Beijing) .....also very common to see children peeing and pooing on the sidewalks !! I'm not kidding i've seen it with my own eyes !! It's hell living here with these people but i have no choice until July !
Another thing ....i will never understand is how chinese are so thin ...but TRUST ME THEY EAT ......all the time ...noone starves here !
My hubby is chinese (obviously much different from the rest) - so if you need more help ...feel free to write us !! Good luck !

I suggest Chinese food as the topic for your project. There's a huge variety including exotic dishes. If you're using the internet, there's plenty of websites with photos, recipes, descriptions.

Food would be as friendly, reseachable and interesting to all as can be. There are tons of info and pictures available on the internet alone. It can be brief or detailed depending on your project.
You can talk about the various cuisines of the regions and the "unusual" dishes etc, and boy are there ever lots of wierd stuff eaten in China.
There is enough material to rival the encyclopedia Britanica.

They make lovely plates.
My mum always saved her best China plates for when the family came round to tea.
