I was born in Mississippi, in the southeastern United States. It famous for it's "soul" food, being the home of the blues, miles and miles of cotton and soybean fields, hurricanes and host of many gambling casinos. It has an Indian reservation, a thriving and business-wise successful Choctaw Nation, who are a band of Native Americans. The government of a native band is allowed to operate somewhat seperately from the US. They are nations unto themselves. It is a hot, damp land teeming with wild animals, eccentrics, writers and artists, but it takes a bit of work finding some of them. It can be backward in many places, we rank low in education and job salaries. Other states laugh at us! Hell, we ourselves laugh at us! 90% of the men will answer to the name "Bubba". We have 2 seasons: hot and really hot. Rain and sun are plenty. It's been a bit over a year since Hurricane Katrina destroyed our southern coastline, and indeed much of the entire southern portion of the state, along the Gulf of Mexico, just up the highway from New Orleans, Lousiana.
I lived in "Elvisland" (Memphis, Tennessee), a couple hundred miles to the north along the Mississippi River) for many years, also, another southern fried area historically important regarding blues, rockabilly, and early rock 'n' roll music and has a wide variety of fine bar-b-q! Lots of rivers, streams, ponds, beautiful varied scenery, forests. The Smokey Mountains, a much different area, are in the eastern part of the state.
I lived in New York City briefly, have traveled a small portion of the planet, plan to visit more of it hopefully, and now again live in Mississippi.
The people here in the South US (and the USA in general) are as varied from one area to another as some countries are from one another. You will hear many interesting ways the English language is spoken. Most residents have trouble understanding some of the accents/dialects.
Like all places, it is many things, some good, some bad. But "ya gotta bloom where yer planted" as my grandma used to say.
