each dot or line under the cross hairs represents another 100yards. So your cross hairs will be 100yards, the next dot would be close to where your bullet will hit at 200 yards, the next dot down should be were your bullet hits at 300 yards, and so on. Its is used to give you a idea of where to place your cross hairs on you target at diffrent yardages.

In addition to what the last person who answered the question, (correctly to I might add) may range finding reticles are designed so that the circle or dot will just cover a deer's chest at the specific distance. While this is rather generalized it works frailly well.

Also many range finding recticles are specific to a caliber. This is kind of a pain but it does help make you more accurate on those longer shots.
