We're building a house, and we want stone and brick. But I do not want any shade of red brick, I want a pastel, cream, beige, brown, white-ish, or grey. I really want a natural looking brown shutter, the batten/board kind (the kind on european style homes, or cottages). My other option is a black shutter. I really want my home to be unique, not like the other red brick homes in my neighborhood. There is somebody in the neighborhood who is building a beige brick, brownish stone home, and I don't want It to seem like i'm copying. Do you guys have any color combo ideas?? (brick/stone/shutter color) I would LOVE to have some opinions! I get confused really easily, and it's resting on my shoulders (my husband certainly can't make a decision like this:) Thanks!

I have many samples in my apt. I've also gotten boral bricks to give me the addresses of homes with the colors I like. I just get really confused, and can't find one combo that I LOVE.

Good choice on the brick company. Boral has a good reputation. But remember that whatever brick you like you will have to truck it to your house. And that costs BIG BUCKS. Just think. 500 bricks weigh one ton. A small house will use upwards of 32000 bricks. Thats a lot of pounds to be trucking. So if the brick you like is made in Southern California and you live in MIami, be prepared to PAY.

Buy local. Don't restrict yourself to a brand just because you spoke to a salesperson. The biggest disadvantage you face is that OVER 90% of brick is RED or a shade variation of red.

Lighter shades of brick (they are usually called buff colors) tend to show dirt lot more easily than darker ones. Cream colored ones have a high incidence of green efflorescence. That means that they contain minerals that will leach to the surface and stain the faces with a green tint. Be sure to ask about that.

I make brick for a living, but I won't tell you which one. I don't want to bias your opinion. However I will tell you this much: You are better off with red brick. I would tell you this even if I made white brick. Red brick tend to have fewer issues with cracking, chipping or staining.

You are making the right decision by facing your house with brick. You will never have to paint it, or re-side it. Just choose your brick with care.

As for the shutters, well, it really does not matter. You can replace those every few years to the color of your liking and depending on the fashion trends.

Brick companies, make all colors of bricks. Look on the web, for a brick company. Once you find a web site, you will see many different colors and styles of brick. You can go to your local hardware store, Home Depot or Lowe's. They can give you the names of companies that make bricks. They also carry samples of bricks.

I'd like to see lemon yellow with key lime green for the shutters. To me these colors emit a feeling of happy and active family (love to dance and entertain).
