i must have answered this question a dozen times now. The kamikaze's didn't wear a helmet they wore a skull cap that held the ear phones for the radio in the cap. The radio was necessary as the kamikaze pilots had very few flying hours and no navigation skills. Thus a seasoned pilot would escort the kamikazes to the target and go home once the kamikazes could see the fleet. The radio being needed to shepard all these newbie pilots.

Why does ANY pilot wear a helmet? It's sure not going to protect you in a plane crash.
The helmets worn by Kamikaze (sp?) pilots were made of leather, and used mostly to hold communications equipment.
As for ejection, I don't think the Mitsubishi Zero (Plane of choice for those pilots) had ejection seats.

Mainly for the communications earpieces, but if you want to know for sure - you might contact the only remaining Kamikaze pilot, a Japanese/Italian by the name of "Chicken" Kachitori who recently got his 50 mission pin.

I'm not sure about this, but I think they wear them to keep themselves safe during the flight. If they had a bumpy ride, they might get knocked out or something without a helmet, and crash into the ocean, instead of their intended target.

If they hit air turbulance on the way to their target or were shot at in transit, ejecting from the plane is safer with a helmet than no helmet. Their goal is to hit targets, not die crashing into the ocean.

Actually, they didn't. They wore something like a "doo" rag which had the rising sun on it, and inscriptions from friends and family urging them to do their duty, and wishing them luck in their flight. Perhaps the first "inadvertent" divine wind pilots had a helmet on, but the ones that went out on purpose did not. And they did not have 'chutes either.
