My mom takes about six to sevensleeping pills a night to go to sleep. She doesn't take them for pain, only to go to sleep. How harmful is that. And what effects do they have on a person who takes them every night?

What if she was pregnant, could that kill the baby? What type of effects will it have on the baby?

Well, it sounds like she's become dependent upon the sleeping pills. It's actually a dangerous addiction. If she used to take it as a painkiller, her body feels more relaxed when she takes it than when she doesn't take it--even when she's not in pain.

Some people do have trouble getting to sleep. However, taking medication in without following the directions on the box is never a good idea. I would say six or seven pills a night is excessive. If she really has that much trouble, perhaps she needs to talk to her doctor.

Sounds like she is exceeding the original dose. Because she does this she will continue to do this, upping the dosage as she needs to, and may overdose. She needs to consult with her doctor and perhaps be withdrawn from it. This can be a dangerous and fatal situation. It's the old, "if one doesn't work, take two...etc." saying.....bad news.
